This week Cape Town has been voted number 3 on Conde Naste Traveler’s World Best Food Cities list and to celebrate we’ve picked our personal favourite places to eat in the Mother City. With the VAST selection of unbelievably good dining establishments, from the finest haute cuisine, to hip & happening hot spot eateries, to quirky food markets, it’s almost impossible to choose, but after much deliberation here are our top recommendations of the not-to-miss foodie experiences for anyone visiting Cape Town this year!
Harbour House, Kalk Bay
In the cool, laid back Southern Peninsular town of Kalk Bay, Harbour House has arguably one of the best locations in Cape Town… if not in the world. Built out over the rocks of Kalk Bay Harbour, above the dramatic crashing waves of False Bay, guests can indulge in some of the finest seafood around whist watching seals and whales play in the bay. Cosy in winter and glorious in summer. A fantastic spot all year round.

One of Cape Town’s long-standing hip & vibey sushi restaurants, the ambience at Beluga is elegant and trendy all at the same time. The handcrafted sushi is outstanding, the cocktails delicious and mains are hard to beat. Try their Springbok Carpaccio starter or the ‘More Than a Beef Wellington’ main course, or savour their Huang Sushi, platters and tasting plates, and you won’t be disappointed.

The Test Kitchen
The Test Kitchen has quickly risen through the ranks to be arguably the top fine-dining restaurant in the Western Cape. With dishes exquisitely prepared and selected by Chef Luke Dale-Roberts, it’s name reflects the experimental interior design and impeccable ingredients that go carefully into every offering. The contemporary artwork, architecture and custom-made hand-stitched leather seats, add to unique dining experience and tables must be booked months in advance, so plan ahead!

On a narrow street in Cape Town’s trendy Gardens, in a building that dates back to the 1830s, guests dine amongst contemporary pieces of art and the dishes combine unique textures and flavours to ignite the senses. A blend of Eastern and Western influences with an African twist, ingredients are sourced from the highest quality local suppliers and put together to form light but exquisite meals in a beautiful setting. Try the Tuna Tataki & Tartare or the Chalmar Beef Fillet with mushrooms, red cabbage emulsion, string bean puree and polenta-pancetta cubes.

Warm and friendly Chef Pons offers some of the best Asian food in Cape Town. Its laid-back, casual and welcoming vibe combined with a menu spanning Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Indonesian, makes Chef Pons somewhat of a Cape Town icon. The Jungle Curry is out of this world, it’s chocolate spring rolls are to die for, and the Crispy Peking Duck is a winner. Wonderful value from this Cape Town Asian gem.
