Botswana is a completely landlocked country bordering Angola, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. It is similar in size to France and is the 48th largest country in the world. The arid Kalahari desert makes up for over 70% of the land surface. Most famous for the Okavango Delta which has been named as one of the seven wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site lies in the north west which makes it an unexpected oasis giving life to a harsh dry environment.
The population in Botswana is very small with only 2 million citizens making it one of the most scarcely populated countries in Africa. The Batswana are the largest ethnic group and, although their language is Setswana, the official language in Botswana is English. Hello in Setswana is “Dumela”. The correct way to greet a female is “Dumela Ma” and for a male “Dumela Ra”. The Central Kalahari is a protected area for the San or Bushmen allowing them live their natural hunter gatherer traditional ways in harmony. Guests visiting this unique area can spend time with these incredibly unique human beings.
The most popular means of transport for the average traveller is via aircraft. Two daily flights depart from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Maun Airport Botswana. Guests are met on arrival for their onward charter flight into the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Savuti, Selinda, Linyanti or Kasane depending on itineraries. Activities on safari include Game Drives in 4X4 vehicles, mokoro rides, boating and walking safaris.
