Created by the Tanzanian Government in 1994 to protect the path of the great wildebeest migration and wildlife indigenous to the area, Grumeti Game Reserve has fast become a vitally important part of the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem. Local communities, conservationists and safari operators work together to ensure the long term survival of the species that make the area their home, and the reserve as a whole, for the benefit of Tanzania, Africa and the world. Numerous exclusive luxury eco-minded lodges have been developed on the reserve to generate low-impact tourism, employment and the funds necessary to keep this vitally important wildlife destination protected.

The best times to witness the Great Migration are between October and July, however game viewing is exceptional all year round. The wildebeest move to Kenya’s Masai Mara around August. Please be aware that the timings of the migration are dependent on rainfall patterns and herds can be found in different areas of the Serengeti depending on movement patterns.
Aside from the iconic Grumeti Serengeti open sided game vehicles, this is the perfect setting for a balloon ride over the plains teeming with wildlife and winding river with countless crocodiles and hippos. Grumeti is also perfectly positioned for a trip to Lake Victoria, where you can take a canoe trip or fishing expedition. Take in the local culture with a visit to a traditional medicine man, or dance with local children in the local villages.
Grumeti Game Reserve can be combined with a safari in other areas of the vast Serengeti National Park or as a stand alone safari destination. For the ultimate beach and bush experience take the short flight to Zanzibar from Dar El Salaam or Kilimanjaro Airport to relax in the idyllic paradise island setting. From these airports you can easily reach most other african air hubs to continue your journey in Southern Africa or elsewhere in East Africa.
