Feel the desolate vastness of the desert bush characterised by acacia trees with wide open grasslands intercepted with salt pans moving onto desert dunes. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected reserves in the world originally established as a sanctuary for the San or Bushmen to continue to live their traditional ways without the influence of modern day living. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is not a place where one can expect to see large herds of antelope. This harsh environment is home to more specialised species such as the oryx or gemsbok and springbok with smaller herds of wildebeest, kudu’s and ostriches. Predators are seen in this area and it is home to the beautiful black Kalahari Lions which have become famous for their awe inspiring beauty.

The dry season in the Kalahari is classified between April to September. The landscape is covered in golden grasses which are intercepted by large wide empty pans which are often deceiving and look like large lakes. The rainy season between November to March is the best time to visit the reserve. The summer rains turn the dry arid land into a green lush paradise attracting large herds of animals as the water gathers in seasonal waterholes or pans.
Most popular are cultural walks with the San people. This allows a glimpse into their world and how they survive in the harsh environment first hand. Game drives in 4 X 4 vehicles are permitted during the day and night, guided walking safaris, horseback safaris and especially during the summer months birding safaris. The most unexpected activity to experience will be the magnificent stars in the never ending night sky.
A fly-in Botswana safari that will have you experiencing the varied landscapes will always include the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve, Linyanti, Savuti Channel, Selinda Spillway and Chobe. Combine Botswana with a visit to Kruger National Park or fly to Cape Town for some beach relaxation and city vibes.
