The Ngoronogoro Crater National Park promises to deliver a hassle-free and complete Africa safari experience. This must-see destination offers remarkable Big 5 viewing opportunities in its unique crater setting – the largest unbroken caldera in the world, at what used to be the largest mountain in Africa. The crater was created when the volcano top erupted and only fertile plains were left behind. The beautiful landscapes that came out of the ashes comprise grassy plains, full of wildlife in close proximity in the crater, verdant forest and a mineral rich lake, where an assortment water birdlife and beautiful flamingos gather to nest and feed. Lodges around the edge of the Crater boast unbelievable views over the crater and park. This is an ideal way to break the ice for first-time safari travellers.

Game viewing in the crater is spectacular all year round, however there are certain times of year that are very busy and are best avoided if you prefer a quieter safari experience. The busiest months are July to September and also December to February after the rains. Therefore we recommend April/May as the best time to visit as there are fewer game vehicles in the crater and the landscapes are green & beautiful.
Game drives through this park offer amazing game viewing, with over 30 000 animals in the diverse habitats and even a chance to spot the endangered black rhino. Arusha Airport is the gateway to the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, but to get there you must fly via Kilimanjaro Airport, which connects with Dar Es Salaam, Nairobi and other major air-hubs.
