Adorned with the highest sand dunes in the world, there definitely is no dispute that Sossusvlei’s warm-red and ochre landscape is one of the most memorable sights you will ever see. These almost mystical dunes are located in the centre of the Namib Naukluft National Park in Namibia. A visit to Sossusvlei promises a desert experience second to none, with the mesmerising colours of the dunes that guide your eyes along their curvy lines into an endless horizon. Climb one of these sandy mountains to get the best views and photo opportunities from the top. An African safari to Sossusvlei is a travel must in Namibia. And although there is not any accommodation within Sossusvlei itself, there are more than enough excellent luxury lodges and hotels within the area. And before you get lost in the desert, you can also try other adventurous activities like hot-air ballooning, traversing the terrain on horse-back or enjoy some stargazing at night.

March to May are the best months to visit Sossuvlei, or August to October. During these months clear skies and cooler air make conditions much more comfortable and the light is a dream for photographers. However in Sossusvlei there is almost no rain fall throughout the year, therefore for wildlife viewing there is no time of year that is better than another, making it an easy destination to fit into an itinerary of Southern Africa, however if Sossusvlei is your priority destination we recommend March or April as the best months.
Hot air balloon over the expanse of giant red sand dunes, traverse one of the dunes on foot or on horseback, or take a sandboarding or quadbike tour if you’re feeling adventurous! Otherwise sit back in elegant luxury at your selected lodge and pamper yourself with spa therapies while gazing at the endless starry skies.
Sossuvlei is one of the highlights of a Namibia safari holiday and we recommend combining it with a visit to Etosha National Park, the Fish River Canyon and Damaraland if you can. From Windhoek you can easily connect by air to Cape Town or Johannesburg, or other neighbouring African countries.
