From East to West across the Southern Cape of Africa
“I have traveled many top destinations in Africa, but my favorite travel experience thus far was rounding the Southern edge of Africa from East to West with Africa&You.
Botswana, and South Africa‘s Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape proved arguably the most interesting mix of coastal paradise and safari wildlife. With every turn and change of terrain, the journey kept us surprised and excited for what was next. Our unforgettable trip began in Botswana. The Okavango Delta was awe inspiring even from just a bird’s eye view. The rains from Namibia had just started to snake through the rivers of Botswana, bringing in a slow water level rise that brought an array of plains game to dry land, endangered wild dogs, herds upon herds of elephant, and more leopards than I have ever spotted on safari.
Buzzing from these amazing wildlife encounters, we followed the coast Southwest: to South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The ports and people of the Eastern Cape exude a charming coastal, local vibe that made ease of being present in each moment. We stopped by a game reserve along the Indian Ocean where the stunning views of the ocean paralleled the wild experience of rare animal sightings (including the Wide-lipped Rhino, Namibian Sable, black Impala, and more). Further West we journeyed on to experience Shamwari Game Reserve, where amazing views of the sunset over the lush mountainside and spectacular star-gazing reminded us that there is more to safari than just the animals.
As we continued along the coast the life blood of each bay began to pump faster until we hit the West: South Africa’s Western Cape. With Cape Town’s faster pace came a rush of new activities. The Victoria & Alfred waterfront became our favorite spot for shopping to the tune of live music. Camps Bay proved to be the most happening spot for beach activities and social gatherings. Kitsch Observatory stole our stomachs, with the best value for money food (including the popular local Neighborgood’s Market) while the more beautiful Stellenbosch, in the Cape Winelands, stole our livers with our favorite fine vintage Sauvignon Blancs.
All the more, we had to remind ourselves not to be blinded by the beauty that performed as the backdrop to all activities: mountain ridges (including famous Table Mountain), long white sandy beaches, and colorful vineyards and trees showing off their red/yellow colors for Fall.
This trip from East to West (Botswana to South Africa’s Western Cape) was a once in a lifetime African encounter that I will never forget.”
